Clearwater, Florida: Classic Ford Mustang: Countryside Mall, US19 Area

Clearwater, Florida: Classic Ford Mustang: Countryside Mall, US19 Area [enlarge]
My now and then What We Drive series continues today with some mobile photography. I was driving toward Countryside Mall, at US19, when I saw this classic Ford Mustang. For what can only be the first time in my life, I was in the fast lane when I wanted to be in the slower lane. No matter what I did, I ended up ahead of him, while I was trying to get a picture of the Mustang.

Finally, stopped at a light, I realized what a great shot was being framed in my rear view mirror. And that was that! I figure that was a '67 or maybe a '68 Mustang, but I really don't know for sure. All I know for sure is that it is one good looking car. A Classic!

And because I have a picture full of cars today, I offer up information on change...

Clearwater, Florida: Clearwater Municipal Cemetery

Clearwater, Florida: Clearwater Municipal Cemetery: Genealogy: Graveyard: Headstones
This graveyard, or cemetery if you prefer, is reported to have been established in 1877. The first burial is said to have been that of John William Jeffords. I don't think it is a coincidence that Jeffords Street is just a few blocks from the cemetery. Can you say "Founding Father"? Or at least one of them.

I do not think it was always called Clearwater Municipal Cemetery. But I have not found any other names for it. If you would like to see what the City of Clearwater say about it, which is not much, click here. I also found a website that has what is purported to be a list of everyone interred there. Click here, if you would like to see that website. Perhaps you have family here? My wife does.

Clearwater, Florida: Coachman Ridge Park

Clearwater, Florida: Coachman Ridge Park: Old Coachman Road: Long Center
Not far from the City of Clearwater's Long Center recreation complex is a neat little park called Coachman Ridge Park. You would hardly think this little place even has a name, it is so small. But they have packed a lot into that one little park, and it also acts like a back door entrance to the Long Center.

In addition to the nice little playground you see above, they also have tennis courts here (two courts), as well as basketball courts (six hoops), racquetball courts (two), a wall for playing whatever against, and an open field for whatever wags your tail. One use of the open field might be to let your four-year-old run in circles until he has exhausted himself.

But then, you may just enjoy letting your little ones wear themselves out on the playground while you enjoy a nearby bench. That sounds pretty good, doesn't it?

Clearwater, Florida: Clearwater Memorial Causeway Bridge: Looking Towards Clearwater from the Bridge

Clearwater, Florida, Clearwater Memorial Causeway Bridge, night photography
This is the night view from the Clearwater Memorial Causeway Bridge. For all the things people might not like about it, I find it to be a really neat looking bridge at night. I love the way they have it lit up. Very interesting. And the shape, the curve of it, is very sinuous. Much more attractive, in my humble opinion, than a straight, square bridge.

Of course, having the lights reflecting in the water doesn't really hurt anything at all, either. I hope you like the picture. The bridge is a neat place to be after dark. If you ever get the chance, it might be a nice evening walk.

Clearwater, Florida: Neighborhood Christmas Decorations

Christmas Decorations in Clearwater, Florida Vacation Land
It is finally cooling off here (48F outside right now), so it actually feels a little more like Christmas. I have seen some pretty amazing Christmas decorations this year, both online and on the street. So I wanted to post some pictures of the kinds of decorations I see in your average, normal neighborhoods around Clearwater and this area. I don't think they have a million bulbs in this display, but it's a nice look just the same.

You can see Santa Claus waving at you, as well as a sleigh, and some reindeer. Oh, and there is Frosty the Snowman too! Click on the photograph to see a larger version. What a great excuse for night photography, eh? If you look closely, to the left of Santa Claus, you can see Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. It's a blow up, however, and looks as thought the wind is pushing him into the house.

This house, I would say, rates about a 7 on the scale of neighborhood decorations. With 1 being just a string of lights, and 10 being a winter wonderland setup in the front yard. Of course, there are a number of homes without any decorations showing. I often wonder if that is because they had a bad year, or perhaps they just don't decorate outside. I am willing to be there are a number of people these days who do not utilize lighted, electric Christmas decorations as a matter of environmental principle. What about you? Where does your house and decorating scheme fall on the scale?

Clearwater Florida: Sunshine Limitless Playground At The Long Center

The awesome playground at Long Recreation Center, Clearwater, Florida
This is the playground at the City Of Clearwater's Long Center. The Long Center is an excellent recreation center, with lots to do for just about everyone. This playground is so big, I thought I would have to drive down the street to capture it all with my camera. How could you not like being a kid if you got to play here?

The playground is called the Sunshine Limitless Playground and covers 10,000 square feet! According to an article published just before the grand opening, in August 2006, "The playground is a state-of-the-art facility that benefits both persons with and without disabilities by providing opportunities for users to play together side-by-side." So, if you're in the area with, or even without, kids, you might just want to stop by and check it out.

Clearwater Florida: Top Of The World Condominium Community

Clearwater Florida: Top Of The World Condominium Community
Today I introduce you to a landmark here in Clearwater Florida. The Top of the World community. It is a seniors condominium community which, I read online, is home to some 60,000 retirees! Yes, it is seniors only, so I guess one could call it a retirement community. Feel free to correct me on that if you know better.

In the photograph above, you see the main front gate to Top of the World. It is a very impressive entrance to a very impressive place. In the satellite image below, you can see where I took the picture above. Look near the bottom of the photo, for the yellow push pin icon.

Now I want you to look at the satellite image below again. If you start at the bottom of the picture, at the yellow push pin, and scan the photo up to the top, which is North, you will see a number of X's. Those are all the buildings of Top of the World! Yes, that's right... there are over 60 of them. Most of the ones I have seen from the ground are three stories tall.

I would not be surprised to learn that you can see this from space. (The Google Earth image was from about 10,000 feet in this iteration) From the yellow push pin to the top X is about 1.25 miles, and it is about .75 miles across. I guess this is why people say the place has its own zip code!

(I was hoping to include a link to more information about this community for you, but I could not find one that seemed worth adding. Sorry.)
